In response to the comment/article in the Dallas Morning Views Blog (in italics) below: There is no anticipated "new party" to expect a "takeover" anytime soon. American politics needs to have continuity with trusted politicians and this is done (not by quitting will the democrats help the cynicism already surrounding politics today) by staying in office. Yes, Democrats do need to reach out to the people (those who voted in Obama for President) who voted against mid-east turmoil.
Democratic Senator Evan Bayh of Indiana announced he will not be seeking re-election.
"It means the Senate is broken. There is no serious policy debate going on. He has to know that his retirement hurts his party. The Senate after the 2010 election will be more dysfunctional, not less. He is surrendering the middle. This cries out for a third party, fiscally responsible, with no social agenda, which doesn't engage in wars we can't pay for."
